From the Elders                     Barry Smith, Chairman

This is a busy time of year at the Henderson Church of Christ. We have just finished a really outstanding Vacation Bible School, and as always, we had a good percentage of the congregation to participate and work. Special thanks to Mark Barber, Kim Scott and Becky Welch for coordinating Vacation Bible School.

We had “Friends Day” last weekend and there was a good crowd with a lot of visitors. Thanks to those members that brought friends and food to the pot luck meal.

Our Guyana team is on their way to Guyana as I am writing this. We pray for their safety and their success.

Several of our youth group are attending Horizons and Youth Camp, and we are hopeful that all of them will take advantage of these opportunities.

This Saturday, July 12, we are having the first of our “Meat and Greet” events at Chickasaw, and on Sunday the 13th we will host a finger food fellowship, after the 5 p.m. service, for the visitors here for  Christian Training Series. We have paid the congregational fee and any member at Henderson can attend CTS at no additional charge. This is a convenient event for our members, and hopefully several will take advantage of it.

You will start seeing one of the elders at the front of the congregation during the invitation. We have listened to suggestions and think this will be good opportunity to be more visible and helpful to our ministers.

WORDS OF HOPE

FRIEND DAY: We had a great Friend Day a few weeks ago on June 29. Thank you for participating in this day by inviting your friends and bringing plenty of food for our fellowship meal. Special thanks go to all who helped set up and clean up the kitchen and Activity Center. This congregation is blessed to have so many people who are willing to serve wherever there is a need.

FAMILY DAY: The last Sunday of this month, July 27, has been designated Family Day. This will be a great opportunity for you to invite any family members who live nearby to worship with you on that day, as the worship service that morning will be centered on the idea of family. If you don’t have any family members in this area to invite, that’s okay, too. Even those of us whose families can’t join us on that Sunday can enjoy the blessing of worshipping our Father with our church family—a blessing we enjoy each and every Lord’s Day.

NEW MEMBERS SPOTLIGHT:

We are excited to welcome Todd and Brittany Lewis into our church family. Todd grew up in St. Charles, Missouri, and Brittany grew up here in Henderson with her parents, Johny and Donna Farris. Todd and Brittany met at Freed-Hardeman and will celebrate their first wedding anniversary this July 21. At the end of August they are expecting their first child, a baby boy named Hudson. Todd and Brittany recently moved here from O’Fallon, Missouri, where they had lived for almost a year. At the end of this month Todd will begin working as a P.E. teacher at Caywood Elementary in Lexington. With baby Hudson on his way, Brittany plans to be a domestic engineer (AKA, full-time mom). You may be interested to know that Todd and Brittany enjoy going to the lake. They also enjoy watching sports, which can sometimes get interesting since he is an Alabama fan and she is a Tennessee fan. Look for Todd and Brittany’s picture on the screen before service and be sure to give them a warm Henderson welcome!

INSIDE OUT

MEAT & GREET

Don’t forget: our Meat & Greet cookouts begin this Saturday (7/12) with the Young Professionals, Prime Time, Auditorium, and Annex classes gathering at Chickasaw’s Pavilion 3 (on the lake by the restaurant) at 11 am. The Young Married class will gather at the same time and place on July 19.

We’ll provide the food; you bring the guests. And don’t be shy—make an effort to get to know someone you haven’t met. Be praying that our guests will see Jesus more clearly as they spend time around His body.

SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE

“Continue to remember the poor” (Galatians 2:10)

Beginning Wednesday the 16th, we’ll be collecting school supplies to help needy families in Chester County. This will be a simple way for you to show the love of Christ to the people of this community.

Just check your worship bulletin this Sunday for a list of needed supplies and purchase as many as you can. Drop off your donations in the Commons or at the church office any time between this Wednesday, July 16th and Wednesday, July 30th.

Also, we’ll need help getting the supplies to the right place for the children who need them. If you can volunteer to help sort and distribute the supplies, contact the church office at 989-5161.

This church’s giving spirit has inspired me before, and I’m confident it will happen again. I can’t wait to see the fruits of Henderson’s generosity and the smiles on these families’ faces.

MOUTH OF THE SOUTH

If Paul were to write a letter, and somewhere in that letter mention your name, what sort of description would follow your moniker? Would Paul spend a few sentences detailing your spiritual nature, your hospitality, your kindness, and your devotion; or would he use his ink to warn others of your behavior?

Paul’s first letter to the church in Thessalonica begins with Paul letting the church know that he thanks God for them and always prays for them (I Thessalonians 1:2). He mentions their constant work of faith and love, and their unwavering hope in Christ (I Thessalonians 1:3). Whatever it was they did when Paul visited them, they did it right. Paul got a chance to see this church in action, and it’s easy to see that he was pleased with their work.

If Paul came to church with you, what would he write? More importantly, what would he write about you? Hopefully, he would be able to say the same things, or at least similar things, as he said about the Thessalonians. This church will forever be remembered as a church that was enamored with their labor of faith and love, and as a church with an unwavering hope in Christ. You may not have a letter written about you, or at least one that will be read two thousand years from now, but you will leave behind a legacy. Will it be like the one the Thessalonians left behind—or will it be something else?
